IN-Spiration Challenge: Wear Confidence on Your Sleeve

Confidence is everything. Any person can have a good idea or say something inspiring, but no one will hear it if there’s no confidence behind it. People would simply ask, “WHY should I listen to this guy?”

Right now, you might be thinking, “But I am confident. Why am I still not getting people to listen?” Unfortunately, the answer could be what you are wearing.

Confidence is a lot more than just what you say and how you say it. The truth is that we live in an extraordinarily visual society. Style is how you show your confidence.

Think about it for a moment. Think about everything in your closet. Now, pick out an outfit that makes you feel more confident. What makes you feel comfortable? Are they the same piece of clothing? More than likely, they are not. When we think of the comfiest piece of clothing in our wardrobe, we probably think of our favorite pair of sweatpants and an old t-shirt. Not something you’d wear to pitch meeting. Instead, you’d want to feel sharp in a nice suit or a classy dress. Right?

Every day, when I walk to my closet, I think, “What outfit will give me confidence today?” Even if I’m only wearing it to get coffee and write, I put that effort in to elevate my own confidence. That is why I am challenging you to do the same.

Starting tomorrow, I’m challenging you to walk to your closet and “put on” your confidence for the day. First, put on something that you would wear every day and take a picture. Think about how you feel and how you are standing when you are wearing that outfit. Then, find an outfit that brings you confidence.

You know those shoes you have in the back of your closet that made you feel powerful, but you wanted to save for a “special occasion?” Make today a special occasion. Want to wear jeans? Elevate them with a nice top and add a stylish accessory.

Once you find that confident outfit, take a picture and print it out next to the photo of your “comfortable” outfit. Do this every day so, at the end of the week, you can see and feel the physical difference in your confidence. Let that be your reminder the next time you want to dress in leggings in a large t-shirt to work because you felt lazy that day.

In-Spiration Challenge: Learning to Inspire Yourself

We’re challenging you to be your own inspiration because if you cannot inspire yourself, you will never be able to inspire others. This could be through your own quotes and writings or look back on your own experiences. Look back on your life. What did you do that shook you to your core and shaped you into what you are today? Did you fail, but were persistent enough to get back up and follow your beaten path?

By reflecting on your own life you can find pearls of inspiration that can touch the lives of your audience just as they affected your life. We are daring you to take that into your own hands. Own it. Take pride in it. See these moments for the inspiring pieces of the story they are and allow it to shake the world.

So, write your own inspirational quote. Write a short memoir even if you are the only one reading it. Inspire yourself. You may be surprised by how much it will energize you to succeed in the future.

IN-Spiration: Think About Change From Different Point of View

Now that we’ve talked about taking action and chase your dreams, we have to talk about what happens when you keep trying the same approach with no positive outcome. We want to explore change can be very different depending no the person. There is only one quote that is perfect for this idea.

Humans are creatures of habit. We do the same thing every day even when we are desperate for a change in our lives. If we even think about deviating from the daily plan, we become terrified of being unproductive or failing at life. Want a quick change to spice up your life? You change your hairstyle. When we want to lose weight, we go on the same diet that takes off a couple quick pounds, but only leads you to gain twice that weight after. If you want to enlighten yourself, you go on an “Eat, Pray, Love,” trip. Do you continue to meditate when you return to your normal life or does it become a picture on your mantel?

This becomes harmful to our personal discovery. Even when we decide to change it’s in predictable in a way that keeps others from judging us. Want a quick change to spice up your life? You change your hairstyle. When we want to lose weight, we go on the same diet that takes off a couple quick pounds, but only leads you to gain twice that weight after. If you want to enlighten yourself, you go on an “Eat, Pray, Love,” trip. Do you continue to meditate when you return to your normal life or does it become a picture on your mantel?

You are different from everyone else. Be different in every aspect of change. Go left instead of right. Don’t just cut your hair dye it bright red or blue.

Do what feels true to you. Be your true self by any means possible and don’t fall into insanity or mediocrity.

In-Spiration: The Importance of Action in the Face of Inspiration

Maya Angelou taught us the importance of self-reflection. Karl G. Maeser explained the necessity of being a better version of yourself. Today, we look to Thomas Jefferson, one of our country’s founding fathers, about how self-reflection and the desire for evolution are nothing without action.

“Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.”

We touched upon this topic with Maeser yesterday. After all, evolution is just another form of action. However, evolution can happen both internally and externally. An action is nothing, but physical. It’s applying for the job, setting your alarm earlier, and going to that yoga class.

The reason we are expanding on how you apply your self-reflection is that it is imperative to success. No one has ever succeeded by standing still, whether it’s a person or a rock on the shore. Eventually, your will erode until you become small, broken, and easily swept by the tide.

Constantly working and pushing for what you want is the only way to ensure your success and you can be certain that your hard work will define you as a visionary, influencer, and innovator.

Will it take time?  Yes. Years? Probably. Most of the best business men and women were determined individuals that worked long, passionate hours for years to achieve their dreams. So, don’t give up now. Keep going. Act and show the world who you truly are.

Motivational Monday: Channeling the Light of Maya Angelou

Today’s motivation comes from the life of a favorite poet of mine: Maya Angelou.

About Angelou’s Life

While she is known for her book “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” she was also known as a singer, actor, director, and civil rights advocate. In fact, she was a good friend to civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.

Most importantly, she was a spiritual leader to many through her words and no-nonsense attitude. She forbade curse words in her home due to the power the words could have. Leaders of peace like Nelson Mandela and President Barack Obama called her a friend. She was truly a “phenomenal woman” as she described in her popular poem.

Angelou had a difficult childhood, having been sexually assaulted at the age of eight and being mute for several years after the incident. Even then, she knew that her words held the power to change the world. Eventually, she would pen the story for “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.”  The memoir would be what took her from a famous entertainer and activist to a global icon.

What We Can Learn From Maya Angelou

This week, we are focusing on becoming your own inspiration, to use your life as an example of perseverance and success. There are very few people that personify this ideal than Maya Angelou who faced adversity from so many fronts throughout her life as an African American woman.

Even though she has passed on, I doubt that her words will ever be forgotten. They are not unlike the words of Elie Wiesel, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, or Malala Yousafzai. They serve as a testament to a life lived. She learned from her experience, reflected on it, and allowed those lessons to make her a better human being.

As an entrepreneur and as an influencer, you must learn from your own life experiences. What would make your life easier? Think of what inspires you, makes you happy or sad. If YOU don’t ask the questions…someone else will and they will be the ones that inspire the world.

So, follow Maya Angelou’s advice.  “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.” Find your light so you may inspire others to do the same.

IN-Spiration: Examining Life and How You Can Start to Thrive

It’s almost been a month on this blog! Can you believe it? Throughout our first month, we have explored how failing can lead to greater success, the power of giving back, and how creativity can revitalize your work environment. Now, we want to focus on the most important part of being an influencer: YOU!

To kick off the week, we are getting IN-Spired to self-reflect with Socrates.

“The unexamined life is not worth living.” 
― Socrates

What does it mean to examine life? Is looking at which habits work and don’t work in your life? Could it be meditating on your place in the universe? Perhaps it’s cleaning up your social media page?

This quote brings up hundreds of questions. However, the core of Socrates’s statement is simple. If you don’t reflect on your life then it’s all for nothing.

Millions of people around the world work hard to survive, to earn just enough to build a safe life. They don’t dare to fail. There’s no jumping outside the box. It’s just existence.

That’s not living.

Life is meant to be explored and understood. If we didn’t reflect on why we were here or how we can make the world better then what is the point of humanity? What’s the point of consciousness?

Okay, that got very deep. Most people are not philosophers. The same, though, can be applied to everyday life. Examine why you want the new job or if the person you’re with actually makes you happy. If you don’t take the time to ask yourself these questions, then you might not be living your life to the fullest. You’re just existing.

Don’t exist. Live. Thive. Examine Life.

The beauty of creativity is that you can basically do anything. The Disney company is proof of that, being the first to produce a feature length animated film (“Snow White and the Seven Dwarves”) and ushering in a world-wide entertainment empire.

 

Being creative and fostering that idea within your company can help your business achieve the impossible and create something worth while.

Before you can do the impossible though, you must believe you can.

“When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionable.” – Walt Disney

Even if you fail, the power of belief can help drive you towards an innovation that you could never imagine. So, get creative. Make something. Dance and sing like know is watching. Think outside of the box. No matter how impossible being creative might seem, you need to keep moving forward like Walt Disney always did.

IN-Spiration: Create An Inspired Brand

Today’s post goes out to the visionary behind the revolutionary car company, Tesla: Elon Musk

What inspired you to take the leap and start your business? Was it something that you are passionate about? Or did you identify a niche market that needed to be represented? Perhaps you created something that could solve problems.

Whatever the reason, it’s not enough that it solved a problem or filled a hole. If you want to make an impression on your audience, you must inspire. You can inspire through design and through your ingenuity.

Look at Elon Musk’s Tesla. Not only did it satisfy a niche group of environmentally conscious millennials and upper crust environment supporters, but it did it with sophisticated style both inside and out. Now, look at other famous brands. Windows inspired generations with its ability to give everyone knowledge at their fingertips, changing the world forever. Wonder Woman inspired girls to be superheroes.

Even the United States of America when it was first conceived marketed itself on the ideal image of a country where every person can have the freedom to make their own destiny without being hampered by societal tyranny. Why do you think so many people still immigrate to the United States to pursue the American Dream? It’s because that is how we advertised ourselves

So, turn your company into the new Tesla or American Dream. Create something that will not only make life easier but create an inspired life for your audience.

IN-Spiration: Remembering the Legacy of Elie Wiesel

My last class with Elie Wiesel.

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, then you might have seen our post about Dr. Elie Wiesel on Sunday, which is also our In-spiration quote of the day today.

   “Think Higher, Feel Deeper”

The reason this is one of my favorite quotes of all time is that it encourages humanity to learn and that, in learning, we may become better human beings.

This is a concept that I hold near and dear to my heart. I have always believed that in education, learning about different cultures and ideas, we might become closer to each other as human beings.  We may understand each other and not see one another as different creatures but as the species.

Elie Wiesel dedicated his life to education both as a teacher and a student. He never felt like he had learned enough, understood enough about humanity and the world we call home. Up until his death last year, he was constantly trying to expand his mind.

This is a lesson that I hold close to my heart especially after taking his course at Eckerd College twice. Hearing his words and soaking in his presence was inspiring.

Which brings me to the second quote.

Yes, I said SECOND! You get two today!

               “We are all witnesses.”

We are each a witness to each other’s stories. Everyone wants to feel as if their story will not only be heard but that it will also be remembered. It is Memory that ensures our influence on the future and is proof that our life was impactful.

Elie Wiesel made it his life’s mission to serve as a witness for the people who suffered and lost their lives in the Holocaust through his book “Night.” We are each a witness to the suffering around the world.

 

That is why learning how to tell your story, your business’s story, and acknowledging the story of your audience is imperative. If we intend to leave a mark, we must first recognize the mark that every person has on our Earth.

In-Spire Yourself: Dare to Do What is Hard, Not What is Easy

Today’s IN-Spiration comes from one of the most beloved presidents of US history when he dared our country to think bigger. It also happens to be one of my favorite quotes from an American president.

“We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…”

John F. Kennedy

This quote helped jumpstart American exploration of space and, eventually, inspired men to walk on the face of the moon.  This was a feat that now human had ever fathomed before and instigated a new generation of dreamers.

However, that is not why this is my favorite quotes.

The reason I love this quote is because simply reading it dares you to do better, be better. Every successful brand or entrepreneur in history faced adversity. They struggled to convince others that their ideas were worth something…, but they continued to persist.

No worth-wild idea is easy. If It was then everyone would have a successful brand. The point of doing something hard is to give that idea worth.

Let me say that again…the struggle is what gives your idea worth. It can face the trenches and come out alive. It can push through boundaries no one has ever broken.

Today, so many people expect life to be easy. Maybe it’s because our parents make us think that we’re special by giving us participation trophies. Perhaps it’s the instant gratification we experience with social media and online shopping. We have expected things to be easy.

We’re are challenging you to struggle. Go on a road trip without a map or a plan. Start a new marketing campaign with only the faintest of ideas. Jump out of the plane without the parachute.

Okay, don’t literally do that last one, but you get the idea.

Choose to go to the moon and do the other things. They WILL be hard, but who said making history was ever easy?
