Life in Another’s Shoes: How to Embrace Empathy

This week we have spoken quite a bit on the importance of empathy and embracing all walks of life. However, we have yet to speak about how to develop empathy.

Empathy is a crucial skill whether you are dealing with coworkers, employees, customers, or friends. It is what gives us the human connection person everyone craves. In fact, it could be the difference between a good leader and a great one.

Does empathy not come naturally to you? Here are a few ways to empathize with people in your life so you can better understand what they need.

Put Yourself Aside

A pivotal part of developing empathy is to put yourself aside.  Empathy is about putting another person’s feelings before your own. Don’t create something just because you think YOU would like it. Develop’ product because you think other people will enjoy it or find it useful. Look at some of the most successful inventors in history. They didn’t create things because they would get rich. They did it because it would make the lives of others easier.

Put Yourself in Other’s Shoes

Although it’s one of the easiest the concepts to understand, this step is one of the hardest practices in developing empathy. The best way to strengthen this skill, you need to READ and IMAGINE yourself as a completely different person. If you are middles aged, middle-class male business owner, read about a young boy risking his life to immigrate to America or the experience of a single mother struggling to make ends meet in the slums.

Ask Questions

One of the easiest ways to understand someone else’s perspective is to ask questions. Ask how someone would react to a situation or what kinds of struggles they experience every day. Not only will you learn more about how other people live and think, but you will also make that person feel heard.

Listen

The most important part of empathy is listening. Even if you don’t agree with a person’s opinion, listing to their story and ideas will help you understand them. Don’t talk. Don’t argue. Just take a moment to listen and comprehend what they are saying. Notice their body language. Open your heart to them as they are opening up to you. When they share their opinion, make sure they know you heard them. Validate their opinion. It might not be correct, but it is THEIR’S, and they are not going to let go of that thinking easily. All we can do is peacefully agree to disagree.

 

IN-Spiration: Think About Change From Different Point of View

Now that we’ve talked about taking action and chase your dreams, we have to talk about what happens when you keep trying the same approach with no positive outcome. We want to explore change can be very different depending no the person. There is only one quote that is perfect for this idea.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein

Humans are creatures of habit. We do the same thing every day even when we are desperate for a change in our lives. If we even think about deviating from the daily plan, we become terrified of being unproductive or failing at life. Want a quick change to spice up your life? You change your hairstyle. When we want to lose weight, we go on the same diet that takes off a couple quick pounds, but only leads you to gain twice that weight after. If you want to enlighten yourself, you go on an “Eat, Pray, Love,” trip. Do you continue to meditate when you return to your normal life or does it become a picture on your mantel?

This becomes harmful to our personal discovery. Even when we decide to change it’s in predictable in a way that keeps others from judging us. Want a quick change to spice up your life? You change your hairstyle. When we want to lose weight, we go on the same diet that takes off a couple quick pounds, but only leads you to gain twice that weight after. If you want to enlighten yourself, you go on an “Eat, Pray, Love,” trip. Do you continue to meditate when you return to your normal life or does it become a picture on your mantel?

You are different from everyone else. Be different in every aspect of change. Go left instead of right. Don’t just cut your hair dye it bright red or blue.

Do what feels true to you. Be your true self by any means possible and don’t fall into insanity or mediocrity.

IN-Spiration: Discover Your Passion’s Perfect Balance

Is is passion has been what gives inspiration and energy to visionaries throughout history. It creates a need to innovate and inspire others. It seeps into the very fiber of our creations, gives them life.

We are a society caught between two generations that view passion differently. One views it as dangerous, something that should be kept behind closed doors for the sake of status quo. Another views it as a way to help expand the world, make it better through music, art, and advocacy. These are the people that see risk as an opportunity rather than a hazard.

However, passion is like anything in life. There is a reason it is related to a fire. When harnessed and controlled, it can keep us warm and cook food. If you let it out of control, it will burn and destroy. Too regulated and it will suffocate and snuffs out in a puff of smoke.

The key is to learn what YOUR balance is. What is that magic spot between smoke and wildfire for you to thrive on your passion? Are you taking too many risks or not enough?

Now, is the time to unleash your passion, to begin to understand that limit. Once you achieve that, you may start to realize how far you can soar.

IN-spiration: One Word of Truth

Today’s IN-spiration comes from the Russian Writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn and is a quote that I have held dear since high school.

When I first read this quote, it made perfect sense to me while confusing so many others. It is the belief that the right word in the perfect place can change the world.

Since their creation, words have always had power over humanity. They have freed entire countries from tyranny and condemned criminals to death. Words can give hope or cause despair. All you need is to know how to use them.

As entrepreneurs, words can help convey a certain image to your audience. Perhaps, they can be used to help energize your team towards success.

The key to creating powerful words to influence your audience is to be sure there is truth behind them. You can use your words to lie and manipulate, but eventually, it will only lead to despair and mistrust. If you incorporate your truth into your company’s content, audiences will feel closer to you as a person. It gives your service, product, or story a face to trust.

Look at Solzhenitsyn. A Russian writer during the reign of the Soviet Union, Solzhenitsyn was an outspoken critic and wrote personal accounts of the mistreatment his people faced. It was his truths that helped bring to life the experience of Soviet prison camps so those responsible were seen for what they were.

Now, I’m not saying that your marketing campaign must defy regimes and change history. However, they do need to make an impact. Every word must count. After all, one word wasted can always tip the scales from your favor.

IN-Spiration: How Fun Can Foster Creativity in the Work Place

Becoming an influencer means thinking creatively, working hard, and doing what you love. However, what happens when that passion becomes work?

Disney and Pixar remind people around the world of the simple joy of childhood. That sense of fun and wonder is what captures the audience’s imagination. By the end of each movie, it’s what hits the heart. It becomes a happy childhood memory even for adults. They will always associate that feeling when looking at a poster for yet another “Toy Story” movie.  It keeps them coming back.

How do you capture the feeling?

If you were to walk into Pixar headquarters, you would see every office individually decorates and Lego figures of characters in the lobby. Even companies such as Google mix whimsy with business for their employees. Why?

Because it makes their employees feel good and attracts the best up-and-comers too. Everyone wants to feel happy. They don’t want to think of work as “work.” Who wouldn’t want to see a Lego Woody on their way into work? (No, seriously, who wouldn’t?) This builds loyalty because people WANT to work with you. That loyalty creates connections, which brings more happy people to support you.

That energy captured by your staff will transfer into your product or service. It becomes fun and welcoming. People WANT to feel that. They want to feel like they are part of that creative process with you even if it’s just absorbing the story on the screen. They become creatively invested.

Malala was proof that anyone can change the world no matter their age, gender, or where they grew up. She’s the youngest Noble Peace Prize winner in history and inspires thousands of girls around the world to get an education no matter the consequences. She hopes to convince others that a book, a teacher, and a child thirsty for knowledge can help change the way the world works.

You might have an idea that led you to start your company or invent your product. However, you doubt that it will make a major impact. Look at this inspiration as a sign that it’s not. Your small piece of history can have a lasting impact whether it’s just in one person’s life or the entire world. Are you ready to change the world?

Look at Elon Musk’s Tesla. Not only did it satisfy a niche group of environmentally conscious millennials and upper crust environment supporters, but it did it with sophisticated style both inside and out. Now, look at other famous brands. Windows inspired generations with its ability to give everyone knowledge at their fingertips, changing the world forever. Wonder Woman inspired girls to be superheroes.

Even the United States of America when it was first conceived marketed itself on the ideal image of a country where every person can have the freedom to make their own destiny without being hampered by societal tyranny. Why do you think so many people still immigrate to the United States to pursue the American Dream? It’s because that is how we advertised ourselves

So, turn your company into the new Tesla or American Dream. Create something that will not only make life easier but create an inspired life for your audience.

IN-Spiration: Remembering the Legacy of Elie Wiesel

My last class with Elie Wiesel.

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, then you might have seen our post about Dr. Elie Wiesel on Sunday, which is also our In-spiration quote of the day today.

   “Think Higher, Feel Deeper”

The reason this is one of my favorite quotes of all time is that it encourages humanity to learn and that, in learning, we may become better human beings.

This is a concept that I hold near and dear to my heart. I have always believed that in education, learning about different cultures and ideas, we might become closer to each other as human beings.  We may understand each other and not see one another as different creatures but as the species.

Elie Wiesel dedicated his life to education both as a teacher and a student. He never felt like he had learned enough, understood enough about humanity and the world we call home. Up until his death last year, he was constantly trying to expand his mind.

This is a lesson that I hold close to my heart especially after taking his course at Eckerd College twice. Hearing his words and soaking in his presence was inspiring.

Which brings me to the second quote.

Yes, I said SECOND! You get two today!

               “We are all witnesses.”

We are each a witness to each other’s stories. Everyone wants to feel as if their story will not only be heard but that it will also be remembered. It is Memory that ensures our influence on the future and is proof that our life was impactful.

Elie Wiesel made it his life’s mission to serve as a witness for the people who suffered and lost their lives in the Holocaust through his book “Night.” We are each a witness to the suffering around the world.

 

That is why learning how to tell your story, your business’s story, and acknowledging the story of your audience is imperative. If we intend to leave a mark, we must first recognize the mark that every person has on our Earth.

In-Spire Yourself: Dare to Do What is Hard, Not What is Easy

Today’s IN-Spiration comes from one of the most beloved presidents of US history when he dared our country to think bigger. It also happens to be one of my favorite quotes from an American president.

“We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard…”

John F. Kennedy

This quote helped jumpstart American exploration of space and, eventually, inspired men to walk on the face of the moon.  This was a feat that now human had ever fathomed before and instigated a new generation of dreamers.

However, that is not why this is my favorite quotes.

The reason I love this quote is because simply reading it dares you to do better, be better. Every successful brand or entrepreneur in history faced adversity. They struggled to convince others that their ideas were worth something…, but they continued to persist.

No worth-wild idea is easy. If It was then everyone would have a successful brand. The point of doing something hard is to give that idea worth.

Let me say that again…the struggle is what gives your idea worth. It can face the trenches and come out alive. It can push through boundaries no one has ever broken.

Today, so many people expect life to be easy. Maybe it’s because our parents make us think that we’re special by giving us participation trophies. Perhaps it’s the instant gratification we experience with social media and online shopping. We have expected things to be easy.

We’re are challenging you to struggle. Go on a road trip without a map or a plan. Start a new marketing campaign with only the faintest of ideas. Jump out of the plane without the parachute.

Okay, don’t literally do that last one, but you get the idea.

Choose to go to the moon and do the other things. They WILL be hard, but who said making history was ever easy?

So many people are starting out on their own with small businesses. They need people like you to help them along the way. Then, when they are as successful as you are today, they will be thanking you for everything they’ve achieved. This is means you’ve done something to secure the future of your industry and made the world a little better.
